Recently in an interview Cardinal Sarah said,
“The West refuses to receive, and will accept only what it constructs for itself. Because it is a gift from God, human nature itself becomes unbearable for western man.”
Ideas have consequences — and one of the worst ideas to come out of the Enlightenment is the idea that human beings have the power to redefine the world around us according to our own principles, without any reference to a set “nature” that God had placed in the very fabric of creation. We try to redefine who is human and who is not; we try to redefine what is male and what is female; we try to redefine the meaning of life and what makes for happiness and how far we can push science without considering ethical questions.
But all of these things have already been defined by God: written in Scripture, the unchanging Tradition, and natural law. We are recipients of truth, not definers of “our own truth”. It is an attitude of grateful humility before God who has revealed them to us!
