Praying Through Food

I was having breakfast with a friend and we were talking about how food has such an impact on our lives, and how much it has to say to us if only we pay a little more attention to it.

I remember during my first silent retreat many years ago where our meals were taken in silence, we were not allowed to speak to anyone, hence I began to pay more attention to the food I was eating. Suddenly, every grain of rice, every tiny pea, and every spoonful of soup started to burst into all sorts of amazing flavors in my mouth! That’s when I realized how much we have taken for granted the food that we eat, and how much we are missing out whenever we eat our food hurriedly or get too caught up with our conversations to notice what exactly are we eating.

Coming back to my breakfast with my friend, she gave me a Madeleine that she had made the previous night. As I started to notice what I was eating, I noticed how smooth the Madeleine looked from the outside, yet it was its crumbly nature within that gave it its awesome texture and flavor! Soon, I began to realize how even when we wish life could be ‘smooth-sailing’, it’s really the ‘crumbs’ in our life that give texture, flavor and meaning to it, if only we dare sink our teeth into it!

And with this revelation, the idea for INDULGENCE sprang up — a workshop to help people Pray through Food, and discover God’s hidden lessons and truths through His culinary creations!
