Keep Austin Catholic

I recently traveled to Austin for my wife’s Half Ironman. She did great. We had a chance to go to a pre-race confession at St. Louis King of France parish off of Burnett. It is a beautiful church and has a beautiful chapel.  This picture of Jesus seemed very providential as we walked up to the doors. Considering my wife trains hard and was about to conquer a race that includes a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run, I determined this image of Christ must be the Crossfit Jesus. It depicts the strongest and fittest image of Jesus I have ever seen. Check those biceps.

I love Austin, TX. The city’s slogan “Keep Austin Weird” really should be “Keeping Austin Catholic” because it seems to attract so many wonderful people.  It is the home to a few IT contributors. I have also spotted the ever wonderful Jennifer Fulwiler at St. William’s and just this past weekend saw Dr. Robert Koons at St. Louis for Mass. Dr. Koons made an appearance in the mini reality series “Minor Revisions” that centered on Fulwiler’s everyday encounters. He shows up at the 22:08 mark.

Another Catholic from Austin has just started offering his thoughts and writings to those interested. Dr. J Budziszewski is a professor at the University of Texas. He is a more recent convert and his story is very interesting. He went from atheism to Catholicism while teaching at UT. He writes books on the natural law which I also highly recommend. I was introduced to his writings back in the days when I taught high school. His thoughts formed many of my own thoughts as I struggled with natural law, politics, and Catholic responses to a secular world. He also contributed Socratic dialogue style apologetics based on his experiences as a professor. I believe the series was called “Office Hours.”  His new website includes many of his older writings and he is also offering new thoughts through his blog. Go over and check it out.

All roads may lead to Rome but they make a pit stop in Austin.
