Should a Christian support Obama?

Recently I posted this. Well, following its publication, I engaged in a conversation with someone very close to me, who did not think it very “Christian” of me to dislike our current POTUS. The following is a letter I wrote to this individual. My intent was never to post this but after much thought and prayer, I realized what I said needed to be heard. I’ve edited the letter to remove this person’s name and any identifiers.

Dear Friend,

I know we disagree on politics. We don’t have to agree on political issues, but since you chose to reprimand me by stating that as a Christian I should not say the things I say about Obama, I must firmly disagree. Respectfully, I must prove that you are wrong in your assertion that being a Christian means you must like everyone.

I once read:

St. Paul writes to Timothy (2 Tim 4:2-4), Proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths….

At no place in the Sacred Scriptures does it say: Be nice! However, popular portrayals of Christianity would lead us to think that the first and greatest commandment is niceness.

I was originally going to focus on three things in this letter.

1. Abortion

2. Same-sex marriage

3. Religious freedom

However, I realized that each of these issues is very detailed and therefore to ensure that I can fully relay as much information as possible, I decided to center on one issue; and to be quite honest, all I need is one, to make my point.

Your belief system regarding this issue is essential to whether you are a Christian. The term Christian refers to all that is good, noble and Christ-like…literally meaning, “to follow Christ.” Because you identify as a Christian I will make the assumption that the Bible is important to you and that your adherence to it is in accord to the Will of God. Because you do not believe in the Magisterium of the Catholic Church I will not reference the Catechism or any doctrines aside from what can be found in the Bible.

Let’s discuss Abortion….

In reference to pregnant women, the term “with child” occurs twenty-six times in the Bible. The term “fetus” (which is Latin for offspring) never occurs once.

Luke 1:36 “And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren.”

Luke 1: 41 “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb…”

In these two verses, God does not say that Elizabeth conceived a “non-viable thing” in her womb, or that a “fetus” leaped in her womb! He says she conceived a SON and the INFANT leaped. “Infant” was also the word used to describe Christ in the manger AFTER He is born (Luke 2:12). According to God, an unborn infant and a newborn infant are the same…living human beings!

Jeremiah 1:5:“Before I formed you in the belly I knew you. Before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.”

Isn’t it awesome that God KNEW Jeremiah in the womb; that he appointed him a prophet before birth? God does not wait to view you fully human at birth. He knows you as human at conception. God says that life begins at conception, and the unborn child is a human being, so as a Christian, wouldn’t you agree?

Let’s continue…

Proverbs 6:16-17: “There are six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him; haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.”

Deuteronomy 27:25: “Cursed be he who accepts payment for slaying an innocent man!”

Psalm 127:3: “Children too are a gift from the Lord, the fruit of the womb, a reward.”

Psalm 139:13-15: “You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, so wonderfully you made me; wonderful are your works! My self you knew; my bones were not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, fashioned as in the depths of the earth. Your eyes foresaw my actions; in your book all are written down; my days were shaped, before one came to be.

Galatians 1:15: “But when God, who from my mother’s womb had set me apart and called through his grace…”

So what does all of this mean? God knows the unborn child. The Bible teaches that the child in the womb is truly a human child, who even has a relationship with the Lord. He curses the man who slays an innocent. Wouldn’t you agree that an unborn baby is innocent? To abort (from the Latin word aboriri, meaning “to perish”) is to kill an innocent person, and the Bible affirms that (unrepentant) murderers cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, as “outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the unchaste, the murderers, the idol-worshipers, and all who love and practice deceit.” (Revelation 22:15)

So why don’t I like Obama? Because he does things like this:

  • As an Illinois Senator, he voted AGAINST a bill designed to prevent partial-birth abortions.
  • He voted AGAINST requiring parental consent for minors who seek an abortion.
  • He is so Pro-Abortion that the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) gave him a 100% score on his pro-choice voting record as a senator.
  • He has consistently refused to support legislation that would define an infant who survives a late-term induced-labor abortion as a human being with the right to live. He insists that no restriction must ever be placed on the right of a mother to decide to abort her child, regardless of whether the CHILD has SURVIVED the initial attempt and is therefore outside of the womb and STILL BREATHING!
  • He openly supports and is endorsed by Planned Parenthood; the organization that kills an average of 910 unborn infants per day.
  • He ensures that PP receives almost $400 million in government (taxpayer-funded) grants a year.
  • On the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade he stated this was a chance to recognize the “fundamental constitutional right” to abortion and to “continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.”
  • In reference to his own daughters and abortion he stated “But if they made a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”

Obama claims to live by The Golden Rule:

Matthew 7:12, “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets.”

Would he care for someone to besiege him and literally tear his arms and legs from his body? And then leave him to suffer if he does not instantly die? Abortion is an obvious violation of the golden rule.

Ecclesiastes 3:14: I recognized that whatever God does will endure forever; there is no adding to it, or taking from it. Thus has God done that He may be revered.

If God allows a child to be conceived, then God obviously has a plan for that child. Mary’s parents didn’t know that she’d give birth to the Savior of the world, but she did. God has a plan for unborn children. Check out Luke 1:13-17, Genesis 4:25 and Judges 13:3-5. To abort an unborn child is to stop a plan of God. God is eternal, so His work is also eternal. Abortion is an attempt to do away with unwanted people–an attempt to make a liar out of God by bringing an end to His work.

I’m sorry, friend, but I cannot sit by in silence and approve of an individual’s choice to continually strip dignity and humanity away from innocent human children. So, THIS is one of the reasons why as a Christian I MUST speak out against our current president. To sit silently would make me an accomplice. I’m not a lawyer, a politician, or a minister, so my power only comes from my words. Therefore I can only write and speak the Truth; and the Truth is, “Proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths…”

  1. Yeah, somehow people choose not to understand that killing an innocent person is wrong. When you get into supporting a politician, though, it’s very unlikely that there would be anyone who actually has good moral character/beliefs. So I could still see someone supporting Obama. Most people, though, just like that they can kill people and are proud of it – Republicans, too.

  2. Grant, it is possible to live a virtuous life or at minimum to strive for it. I may be naive, but I don’t believe every single politician has to be immoral for them to make it up the ladder. Since all we ever see/hear about is Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Barbara Boxer, etc plus all the sex scandals involving politicians, it appears they are all evil and liars. But let’s say you have two candidates with shady beliefs, you don’t want to vote for either but you still have to pick your poison. The smallest amount of morality is all you can go with.

  3. LT, I am a friend of Stacy’s. I have been voting pro life since Roe vs Wade. I have read this article and one of the posts on your site. I will be looking for you on Ignitum. It is a great pleasure to meet you. I have taken the liberty of passing this post onto a twitter friend named Crystal Wright, you may have seen her on Fox News, she is often a guest speaker and blogs as GOPblackchick. Her focus is political, not spiritual, but she is a Chrstian, and she is constantly under vicious attack from the left, so you know she must be doing God’s work. Gutsy woman, you’d like her, I think. Once again, it is a pleasure to meet you.

  4. LT Horton, this is a very good start of a rebutta to the other person, and you have shown that one does not need to use the teachings of the Catholic Church, but only Holy Scripture to back up what you say. Many times I’ve seen when scripture is use the other person will try to say that ‘it is out of date and does not pretain to us in our time, which of course we know is false. I’m working on a peace for some yahoo groups in relation to the obama mandates and also chose the passage you used from 2 Timothy to go with a few more quotes from the New Testament and quotes from various Saints.
Keep up the good work, we can be on the offensive without being nasty to others.
    “A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them;
the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” – Proverbs 22:3

  6. Excellent presentation. It’s amazing that so many people cannot do the math about the number of God’s little ones who have been killed by abortion. Think of what the United States might be like today had those children had a chance to live and contribute to the culture of this nation – not to mention the potential economic benefits.
Thank God for people like yourself willing to write the truth no matter how painful it might be.

  7. I believe that the West is clearly being strangled by an unholy alliance of Marxist and Liberal fanatics. The Marxists started long ago by infiltrating the Churches – they actually planted a large number of activists. They did the same with left-wing political parties and universities. Their aim is to win over the West by capturing important institutions. The Liberals – including the politically right wing ones – go along with them because they too would like to see traditional values gone. However, these liberals are playing into their hands because once the Marxists gain control the libs will also suffer.

  9. First, welcome to the IGNITUM TODAY community, LT.
    Second, something to consider:
“In reference to pregnant women, the term “with child” occurs twenty-six times in the Bible.

In his essay “Catholics and Abortion” (found in “Catholic Essays”), Fr Stanley Jaki focuses on one of the intermediate verses here, often translated “in those days,” but which he states is more accurately translated as “immediately.” “And Mary rising up in those days [immediately], went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda. And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth” (Luke 1:39=40). The significance, he notes, is that this was a way for Mary to check the angel’s news to her: she was without sin, but this does not mean the same thing as “all-knowing.” She headed to Bethlehem–a few days’ journey, according to Fr Jaki–perhaps in part to check the angel’s news: why wait the extra weeks to discover a lack of period (and hence to discover that she was pregnant) when she could easily verify this by checking her cousin’s pregnancy?

Thus, the Child in her her own womb could scarcely be more than a week or two old by the time of this encounter with her kinswoman. This, incidentally, is backed by the traditional dating of the ages of St John and of Christ. The Child was recognized by His prophet-cousin as the Messiah, and hence as already being Man by this time.

  10. Love this!! I always ask “pro-choice” Christians to tell me how many people are there in Luke 1:41 (the Visitation). Hmmm, there are FOUR. 🙂 Great job, LT!!

  11. LT
Great letter. We all have to stand up for life and for truth. So many people have the attitude that what does it matter? I truly believe that all our actions will be judged including how we voted and how we stood up for the truth!

  12. I just saw there this topic was picked up by ‘Catholic Online’ and shared it from there. Way to go LT Horton, your message is getting spread around.

  13. You’ve got it all wrong. As a “Christian” you’ve heard your lord and savior is the “judge” – not you and not the government. As a so-called “Christian” I’m sure you’ve heard of “free will”? As a “Christian” have you ever heard of a “personal relationship with the lord”? Key word – personal. As a Christian just because something is “legal” you know it doesn’t mean you have to do it, correct? (I’m sure you could care less about back-alley abortions, etc., so I won’t bother remarking on health consequences of women if abortions were not available by professionals. Matter of fact, you probably think if a woman dies as the result of an abortion – that’s what she gets, right?) As a “Christian” you’ve heard there is no sin greater than another? May I suggest you “humble yourselves in the site of the lord”. I pray your friend doesn’t ditch you after reading your self-righteous, completely out-of-context hate-mail so that you may learn a thing or two from her. People like you are the reason real Christians are lost to “the world” every day…and for that you and your “comrades” will be held accountable.

p.s. because I’m curious, and please indulge me: how are babies born to teen moms and dads or strung-out crack addicts or abusive child molesters and rapists part of “Gods plan”?!?! I would never choose to serve your “God”.

  14. CFisher,

I’m not sure why you equate this letter with hate-mail. It was not a personal attack on her character but a basic letter of objective facts from a source that she would not refute as false. She identifies as Christian and believes the Bible is the sole source of faith direction. I utilized that tool to deliver my argument. You appear to be very upset and used a lot of quotation marks and I’m not sure why. Just so you know, my friend did not ditch me, but instead, we’ve engaged in a deep, respectful dialogue about this issue. She agrees with everything I wrote. Also, to answer your question, babies born to drug addicts, rapists, and molesters are still people. Just because their parents weren’t moral people doesn’t mean that they can not still live a good life and become better people with character and values that were lacking from their parents. Children aren’t always born to ideal situations, but that doesn’t define who they are and who they can become in life.

  15. I love what you wrote. Amen sister! I was following a truck today that had an Obama/Biden sticker on one side and a Not of this World sticker on the other side of the back. What a contradiction I thought, I so wanted to ask this person to explain how you can be for Jesus and Obama at the same time? but alas I did not have all those perfect scriptures you have listed here . Obama the abortion president, Christians need to Unite and vote him out and stop the Abortion healthcare bill.

  16. LT,
I do not think this could have been better conveyed. You did a wonderful job. As for the individual who would not serve our “God” I find that sad. I say that because our God is a God of grace and mercy. Our God can take an un-ideal situation and bring a miracle out of it. The best example of this was Christ’s death on the cross for us. Punishing and subsequently killing an innocent man is anything less than ideal; however, in doing so God fulfilled Old Testament prophesy, redeemed ALL in the world from their sin and pasts and promises us a greater future in Him. So, I find it sad that the individual who would not serve our God states that, I would much rather know that God loves me before my failures and sins, during my failures and sins and after my failures and sins. I do not live a life of regret because I serve a God who loves unconditionally, forgives unconditionally and accepts unconditionally.

    1. Easier said tell the woman that was raped that her child conceived with her rapist was is a beautiful miracle. Many people are quick to judge but have not walked in another persons shoes. If God himself have given us free will than who are we to take it away. I myself personally don’t believe in abortion but I also have never been raped and can’t tell you what I would do if in that situation. I’ve also been blessed with a supportive family so when I had my child even though I wasn’t quite ready I had the support to help raise me child. Not everybody has that. I just think at the end of the day only God can judge

  17. Plain and simple….if you voted for and supported Obama then you must have voted for him because of everything he supports. he clearly states that he is against Godly values such as God in America, he is in favor for abortion, he is in favor of same sex marriage, and he believes that God has no place in America. Therefore, if you support and voted for Obama, then you too believe that God has no place in America, therefore, you truly are not a Christian. You may disagree, but then think about this…..do you really think that if Jesus was here that he would have voted and supported Obama? I know he never would have supported Obama.

  18. NO HE IS A EVIL SATANIC PERSON WHO IS TAKING OVER THIS COUNTRY AMERICA IS DEAD YEAH HE WILL HAPPEN HERE THIS SUMMER YOU HAVE A BLACK HITLER
