The Church Has No Need of Gates

Guest post by Madeleine Kirk, Australia.

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”
— Matt 16:18

Hades trembles in the face of the Church, not the other way around. It’s Hades’ gates that will not stand. The Church is the aggressor. The Church has no need of gates.

Why? Because Jesus the “Messiah, the Son of the living God.”, “descended into Hell and rose again on the third day.”

The evil we see in the Church and the world today is real and dangerous, but it is in its death throes — like a serpent whose head has been crushed, defeated but still writhing in a last ditch attempt to cause harm. But it has been defeated, it is dying.

We must not get the story wrong. The Church is never really on the back foot, because Christ is her Lord, and He has conquered death.

  1. I don’t disagree. Evil will be defeated but while it exerts its power and influence we all suffer. My faith tells me that Satan will be crushed but I wonder how long we will have to wait. At the moment we see a church divided – heresy, corruption and perversion visible to all. We know that all too few of our church leaders have the courage to stand up for the faith and that when they try they are vilified mercillessly.
So yes, evil will be defeated….but, dear Lord, how long will we we have to wait? How long will we have to put up with church leaders who no longer follow Christ, no longer support the magisterium, no longer defend the faith. I pray daily for a sign that the Church will recover and become what is mean to be- the bulwark of truth and the dispenser of grace.
