So Here’s What The Culture of Death Looks Like

I’m one of those guys that, for the most part, tends to brush off ‘sensationalist’ comments about the culture. You know what I’m talking about, right? Sometimes you meet people that seem to have completely withdrawn from the culture for some reason or another and encapsulate themselves in a Christian bubble. I’m not one of those guys.

I had cable once. I grew up in the 90’s. I went to public school. Yes, I’m aware of how ‘bad’ it is.

But just tonight I had one of these personal epiphanies. My eyes were opened just a little bit more. Or rather, I think things are continuing to get worse in the culture.

I opened my browser and took a gander at one of the world’s “leading news” websites, CNN. Why? I don’t have a clue. I despise all secular news media, for the most part.

Anyway, I scanned the day’s “top headlines.” I wasn’t shocked at the stories or the events themselves. But what I’m shocked by is the overt obsession with the topics.

I’ve written the headlines below. Take a look:

  • Sportswriter blogs his suicide
  • Murder and racial clichees

Notice the obsession related to death, violence, and sexuality. Take note that this is on the front page of one of the most visited news sites online, at 8pm on a normal Saturday. And finally, notice how you feel after reading through the list.

Thank God for redemption.

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

  2. At the end of Simon and Garfunkel s “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme” album, they sing Silent Night over a recording of the 7 o’clock news. Its very chilling and is a beautiful and artistic reminder of two different ways of looking at the world which sometimes are intermixed.

  3. Gee, Ryan, we could list everything from the first murder in Chapter 4 of
Genesis through God’s decision to kill all of humanity with the flood, Sodom
and Gommorra, Lot’s incest with his daughters, Joseph being sold into slavery
by his brothers, the ten plagues and killing of firstborn, stoning those found in adultery, Saul’s many attemps to murder David. Saul’s suicide, David’s adultry
with Bethsabe and his orders to have her husband sent into a battle so he would be killed, the many hundreds of thousands slain by the command of God through
the Isrealites. We could keep going right on up to the Inquisition and through the Reformation. There is nothing new under the sun.

      1. I did check it out and am quite impressed. Thank You.
It’s good to be part of Catholicism’s transcedental stage –
        that all may be one.
        .

    1. I guess the difference being that all that didn’t happen in one or two days’ time. Or maybe it did, but it wasn’t compiled and distilled down to the most hateful and then presented on national TV. We unplugged the TV and stopped the paper the day after Obama’s re-election and are much more peaceful. Bad news still leaks through, can’t be avoided, but at least it doesn’t hit us like a fire hose.
