Good Wins

“Fairy tales do not give a child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.”
-G.K. Chesterton

“Good will always win.” – Snow White

My love affair with fairy tales began when I was a child. I remember being 4 and begging my mother to take me to see Cinderella at the movies, my very first show. It”s been love ever since. Fairy tale stories ignite the imagination, inviting children of all ages to enter another reality. On another level, fairy tales usually center around a battle of good versus evil. Good wins. “And they lived happily, ever, after”; the words that end so many of our favorite stories. Words that we long to be true in our own lives.

I was reminded of all of this last night when watching ABC”s new drama Once Upon A Time, produced by the same makers of LOST. Once Upon A Time tells the story of two worlds existing at the same time; the evil curse which exiled Snow White, Prince Charming, and many other familiar characters from their world to ours. The characters are banished from “fairy tale world” into our world, having no idea who they really are, or what is their destiny. The daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, a woman named Emma Swan, returns to the exile-town of Storybrooke (ha-ha), igniting what”s referred to as “the final battle” between good and evil. Emma, though she has no idea, is the only hope of salvation and reversal of the Evil Queen”s curse.

As someone who loves LOST, it struck me when the producers of this show, who also worked on LOST said, “If LOST was a show about redemption, then Once Upon A Time is about hope.” Hope, now that”s something to believe in!

At one point in the show, Henry, the little boy who nbso online casino reviews seems to know exactly what”s happening tells Emma, “They don”t know who they are.” Ah! So true! Could have that as a caption underneath a photo of every one of us. How often do I forget just who I am? I am not a fairy tale queen, but I am something much more. I am a daughter of the King. I am a beloved child of the Creator. So are you. Sin, dark, disgusting, evil sin has exiled us into this fallen world where we”ve forgotten who we are, and what our destiny is. The true evil One has tried to convince us that this world is all there is, and that good cannot triumph. One only need look around at all of the horrors committed by our fellow man for that lie to start feeling true. But like Snow White, upon realizing that her daughter Emma survived the trip from that world to this (via an enchanted tree), we too find the hope to believe that good will always win. We look at the image below and know that indeed, good has already won.

  1. I just watched the pilot as well… and as someone that believes in the “Battle of Good and Evil” (cough “Defend Us In Battle…cough) I loved it! So I came here and saw that you posted on it! For a guy, I might be a tad too excited about the show… but Good does always win.

    Always.

  2. I will watch the show. I think that Ty would like it. And Karen could try it.
I like the way that you can relate topics to Christianity. Thank you for doing that for me.

  3. I’m a bit obsessed with fairy tales and fantasical legends and modern spins on them… but these connections you made to ourselves and Christ are spot on!
