Author Archive: Elizabeth Hillgrove
Elizabeth Hillgrove is a young cradle Catholic who grew up in a tight-knit, if not absurdly close family in the tiny Catholic world of Virginia. After a few divots and detours into apathy, embarrassment, and a vested political interest, Jesus Christ jump-started her faith life. Elizabeth has researched her way into a passion for bringing the simple, fulfilling Truth to youth and young adults, especially females. A recovering tomboy, Elizabeth will challenge you on the field, in the pool, on a trek up a mountain, or in the art studio. Game on. She is one of the three Bright Maidens and her website is Startling the Day.

This August, I went back to school to learn how better to teach, only partly because the smell of fresh notebooks and sharply pointed pencils fills me with satisfaction. In my child development class, we learned that children’s brains are incapable of empathizing directly with someone else’s perspective until they reach eight-years-old. They can’t imagine [...]

Last year, Sr. Lisa challenged me to examine my vocation and I did… kind of. Tony called me on my bull you-know-what, correctly so. I spent the next while asking a lot of questions I never wanted to fully explore.

Hey friends! I’m back in vlog form to give a basic, beginners, lingo-free explanation for single women about how to learn your body’s natural queues and cycles.

How to convince someone to be pro-choice. Or better yet, how to convince someone to be pro-abortion: Get them addicted to crack. Consequently, crack numbs their value of life over death by making fuzzy that line between reality and their next high. This allows them to see murder in a justified light, if the chips [...]

“Do you think they want to die? Tell me, do you think the people training the suicide bombers want to die? Do you? Do you think they want to die?” The inquisitor exacerbated his vile prodding by point his finger a few inches from my face. Such are consequences. Last week I travelled to the 2012 Conservative [...]

Dust off the cameras and projectors, pull out the forgotten chairs, and unpack several dozen more sleeves of wafers: Christmas is almost here! With Christmas comes the perhaps temporary, reverse diaspora of many of God’s people. Time to shake off the dust to let the Light shine through ourselves. We’ve been preparing for this, friends! [...]

“I know Catholics aren’t exactly known for being spontaneous…” my priest said to a chorus of laughter. This morning’s Thanksgiving Day Mass took a turn for the unexpected when the conclusion of our priest’s homily called for an open forum among the community. He asked the 100 or so in the congregation to “go around [...]

With the help of a winky face, Sister Lisa challenged me to reach into the deep end of my spirituality. Her honest and beautiful approach to a recent wedding led to her curiosity of my perspective on the possibility of religious life today. The winky face was for effect. Other than the occasional pop culture reference, [...]

Today is day 183 of the romantic relationship with my beau. Six months, half an anniversary, the six-mensiversary, a nanoversary, halfaversary, something somewhat silly to celebrate. Or is it? Rather than swoon to you about the awesome man in my life, I thought I’d take a crack at how we got here. How did I [...]

Calling all young men with a blossoming Love for Christ! Your time has come, brothers. You have been called up. “It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.” – 1 Timothy 2:8 We need you and your manliness to take one for [...]

Evangelizing is a scary word and Catholics don’t like it. I used to date a Baptist and in the spirit of ecumenical harmony, I went to a “megachurch” with him. I was greeted at the door by several smiles, handshakes and an immediate welcome. With the exception of some hateful words from some YoungLife kids [...]

Imagine you’re sitting next to the man or woman who makes your heart audible through your shirt. This person sits with hands in lap, playing hopscotch with his or her gaze, directing and redirecting them from the floor to your eyes. You speak in nervous, hushed tones, asking one another about your days and about [...]

As it turns out, Mary is one of my favorite writing topics. I have always been fascinated by her, for obvious reasons. Suspend reality for a minute: if anyone ever “proved” Christianity was not the Truth, then billions of people would have been duped by a 13-year-old pregnant girl. That’s pretty heavy. Fortunately, not only [...]

Friends, we have come to a crossroad. To tweet or not to tweet? For those of you grumbling and threatening to move your cursor over to Stumbleupon or Catholic Answers, hang on a second. I have been on Twitter for two and a half years now and I’m convinced it is a valuable idea sharing [...]

During His travels, Jesus came to Samaria and sat by the stone wall of a simple well. He asked a woman there for a drink, which was confusing for the woman because of the tension between their nationalities. Jesus said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to [...]

Hello, my name is Elizabeth and I’m repressed. I’m a Catholic woman, after all. The Bright Maidens movement blossomed out of refuting this very concept. The original conversation between the Bright Maidens was a revolutionary chat ending with “How dare they tell us we’re stifled!? We’ll show them!” We bought ink by the barrel, *ahem* [...]
